Whether you are a visitor on vacation in Savannah or a local looking for ways to spend a little downtime, you'll find a variety of events and activities around town in June. Here's some of what's going on as we head toward the summer season.

Scavenger Hunt Run

The first Wednesday in June is National Running Day, an annual coast-to-coast tribute to the sport. In Savannah, runners will celebrate the 'holiday' with a Scavenger Hunt Run (led by Fleet Feet Savannah) followed by a Rock 'n' Roll Savannah party at Wild Wing Café in City Market. This event is sure to 'rock' for beginners and dyed-in-the-wool runners alike.

When: June 3, 6:30 PM start time

Where: Party at Wild Wing Café, Barnard Street

Blues, Jazz & BBQ Festival

The blues will be back. That's right, Southern blues will waft along the riverfront the first weekend in June, along with the velvety sounds of jazz, and the tempting aroma of sweet, spicy and smokey BBQ served up by some of the best local BBQ joints. This family-friendly festival also has an arts market and creatively decorated six-foot guitars on display and for sale as part of the Rhythm & Art Guitar Project (funds go to H.U.G.S. Foundation, a counseling and vocational guidance service).

When: June 5 – June 7

Where: Rousakis Plaza, River Street

Cost: Admission is free

First Friday for Folk MusicFolk music enthusiasts mark your calendars for the Savannah Folk Music Society's First Friday event. This coffeehouse-style concert will featureRoy Swindelle, an accomplished singer/songwriter and one of the Coastal Empire's best-known multi-instrumental musicians. SFMS President Chris Desa, also an accomplished singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, will emcee and perform as well.

When: June 5, 7:30 PM – 10:00 PM

Where: First Presbyterian Church

Cost: $5.00 minimum recommended donation

Jailbreak Mud Challenge

In the Jailbreak Mud Challenge you are an escaped prisoner on the run, with the law in hot pursuit. Freedom awaits 4.2 miles and 40-plus obstacles away. The course is the Chatham County Sheriff's Office training course, and it's said to be the toughest in the Southeast. You can tackle the course alone or tethered to three 'fellow fugitives.' Proceeds benefit the Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes.

When: June 13, starting at 8:00 AM

Where: Sheriff's Office Detention Center, located off Chatham Pkwy

Cost: Individual races: $50; 4-person tethered team: $200

Movies in the Park

Starting in June, Tybee's Memorial Park is transformed into an outdoor theater every third Saturday during the summer. Films are family oriented and the show kicks off after sunset. Just grab your blanket or beach chairs and gather up your family or movie buddies and enjoy the al fresco flick.

When: June 20, starting at 8:30 PM

Where: Tybee Island

Cost: Free

JCB Mudfest

This year, the JCB Mud Run and Dig the Ride are combined. Runners slosh through 5 miles of mud, water and more. Bike riders traverse the 5-mile XC course. The courses cross at special junctures. There's a free mud run for kids age 7 and under. And you can watch the action and enjoy food and drinks in the Party Pit. Proceeds go to the Lady Bamford Center for Early Childhood Development.

When: June 20, starting at 8:00 AM

Where: JCB North American Headquarters, Pooler

Cost: Mud Run: $100-$140 per team; Dig the Ride: $30-$50 per rider

Free for spectators ($10 donation if partaking in the Party Pit)
