Whether or not the groundhog sees his shadow, we tend to see the spring-like weather in Savannah in February. And this unofficial start of our hometown's farewell to the winter season is accompanied by romantic happenings and historic tributes with cultural offerings and running events sprinkled throughout. So prepare to leave winter behind and sweeten up your leisure life with  February fun.


Savannah Black Heritage FestivaI

One of the ways Savannah honors Black History Month is a three-week-plus family-oriented festival. This year, in addition   to the  ever-spectacular Grand Festival Day, visual art exhibitions and music and dance performances, the festival offers two special "firsts." Walking tours are planned to several areas significant to Savannah's rich African-American history. And, a traveling exhibit of The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum will be on display at the Beach Institute at the month's start.


Gray's Reef Ocean Film Festival

You can look forward to another exciting film lineup this year, which includes two full nights of 3D films that explore the underwater world. You'll  be swept away to the remote Galapagos Islands and to the heart of ocean reefs, and immersed in a story of survival in the unforgiving environment of the  Arctic and in a secret world within the sea. New this year is a Sunday matinee at Tybee Post Theater that features a variety of films from the International Ocean Film Festival.


First Friday for Folk Music

Local acoustic guitarist and singer Ricky Standard counts James Taylor,  Hendrix and Clapton among his musical influences, and he will bring that inspired style to a performance for the February First Friday for Folk Music audience.  The Savannah Ceili Band will also perform, playing traditional Irish dance music on accordion, guitar,  whistle, flute, bodhran, banjo, and bouzouki.


Critz Tybee Run Fest

A running event like no other,  the Critz Tybee Run Fest offers five different races for your choosing. If you participate in all of them,  you'll  run a full marathon. Courses for the 5K, 10k, half marathon and one-mile run take you along Tybee's  quaint streets past sublime scenes of natural beauty. Your view from the 2.8-mile course along Tybee's  beach is a close-up of the deep blue Atlantic.


Georgia History Festival's Colonial Faire & Muster

Curious about what  18th-century life was like in Georgia?  Pay a visit to Wormsloe   Historic  Site for the annual  Colonial  Faire & Muster program and watch that period in history come alive. Learn about the founding of Georgia,  watch the mustering of the militia, experience cooking, and craft demonstrations, and enjoy Colonial song and dance - all while surrounded by the beauty of nature.


Super Museum Sunday and FREE Family Day

Once a year -  on a Sunday afternoon   -  dozens of museums,  historic sites, and cultural institutions in and around  Savannah open their doors to the public for  FREE. It's a chance to take in as much of our city's  rich history and culture as you can fit into four hours -  and it won't   cost you a dime in admission.   On that same day, Jepson Center for the Arts will host the  February  FREE Family Day where visitors can explore contemporary art and meet and discover local artists.


Georgia History Festival's Georgia Day Parade

Don't  miss one of Savannah's  most cherished annual events -  the commemoration of our city's founding in 1733. It's always a colorful parade with musicians and local dignitaries marching through   Savannah's  historic squares along with parade participants dressed as historical figures and thousands of elementary school students dressed in period costumes  (many of them handmade).


Cupid is Stupid Bar Crawl

February 11

No matter  if you're celebrating Valentine's Day or feeling  a little anti-cupid, why  not join  others for a Valentine-themed    pub crawl  on the Saturday  before  the  "day of love."  You can travel at your own pace through 12 downtown bars and restaurants that are offering drink specials for pub crawl participants.   There's  free swag too  (while supplies last), and an after-party at Savannah Smiles.


Davenport House Valentine's Day Weddings

Say "I do" on Valentine's  Day at the Davenport House Museum.  Ceremonies will be performed by a licensed officiant every  15 minutes in the picturesque courtyard garden.  Bring a valid  Georgia marriage license, and contact the  Museum in advance if you would like to choose a time.


Savannah Book Festival

Savannah  Book Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and will once again be set in venues around postcard-perfect Chippewa,  Wright and Telfair  Squares. The event has more than  40 authors scheduled for the  Main  Festival  Day. This year marks the silver anniversary of the annual  Savannah  Irish Festival, one of several of our city's  world-class celebrations of Irish heritage.  As a kickoff to Savannah's  season of "celebrating the green,"  it offers four stages of live entertainment including a Children's  Stage with performances, especially for the wee ones. And everyone will love the lively Celtic music and high-stepping dancers,  as well as tickle their taste buds with delicious Irish favorites.


Color Vibe 5K

If you've  been waiting for the Color Vibe 5K, note that it's in February this year. And, as usual, it promises a vibrant time with all the  "happy"  you can handle.   So put on your white shirt,  lace up your running shoes, and invite friends and loved ones to join you in getting covered from top to toe with splashes of edible,  biodegradable paint powder in tie-dye colors. The race is not timed and there is no hurry;  so you can run, walk or even dance your way to the finish line.


Mardi Gras Tybee

February 25

Are you ready to celebrate Mardi Gras? Just drive out to Tybee at month's  end. The island will be dressed up in purple, gold and green flags and the good times will roll in true  Tybee style. Festival goers will line the streets for a sprightly parade that features fantastical floats and colorfully-costumed marchers and cyclists.  Revelers will take to the street for an exuberant Street Party with live music and animated street performers.   And it's a good bet that all will shout out for beads!
