Summer is in full swing and Savannah is bubbling with awesome things to do. Here are just a few of the many "cool" events you get to pick and choose from during the month of August.

Savannah VOICE Festival

Now in its third year, this two-week-long festival will again enchant audiences with a feast of opera, musical theatre and popular song performances, inform and inspire aspiring vocalists through master classes given by world-renowned musical artists. The celebration gets underway on August 2 with two marathon sessions of arias and songs, and it culminates on August 16 with an electric finale followed by an Opera Gala Dinner where you get to mingle with the artists.

Dog Days of Summer

Sultry or not, the first Friday and Saturday in August will be dog days-literally. That's because the first-weekend event is a dog-centric one with doggie vendor booths, gourmet K-9 treats, and a pup parade with costume contest. Pet parents can also enjoy an outdoor movie or strike relaxing poses at a Dancing Dogs Yoga session. And, there will be pup pools and misting stations for cooling off.

First Friday for Folk Music

Savannah Folk Music Society's August concert will feature two acts that are making their second First Friday appearance. One is Clark Byron, a critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter who has been performing and recording country, pop, folk and gospel music for almost 40 years. The other is the musical duo of Chris Emerson-a virtuoso mandolinist-and Ty Bennett-an award-winning singer/songwriter/guitarist. The duo has been performing and recording for more than 15 years.

When: August 7,7:30pm- 10:00pm

Where: First Presbyterian Church

Cost: $5.00 minimum suggested donation

Free Family Day: I Love the 90s

Turn back the clock at Family Day at the Jepson Center. The theme is in keeping with Come As YouAre: Art of the 1990s, an exhibition that runs through September 20. Enjoy a special concert, make temporary tattoos, and step up to the one-minute sculpture photo challenge by posing in spontaneous ways with everyday objects to become a transient work of art.

When: August 8, 1:00pm- 4:00pm

Where: Jepson Center for the Arts

Cost: Free admission

Leopold's Ice Cream Birthday Block Party

Ice cream lovers mark your calendar! August 15 is the date for Leopold's annual block party. This world-recognized ice cream parlor turns 96 this year. The birthday bash will have music, games, contests and a birthday cake. To further mark the milestone, single scoops will be 96 cents all day.

When: August 15, Noon- 8:30pm

Where: In front of Leopold's, Broughton Street

Cost: Block party is free

Movies in the Park

The 3rd Saturday marks the end of the summer outdoor movie series in Memorial Park on Tybee Island. The movie for August is Earth to Echo, a family film about a close-knit group of four kids who embark on an adventure during which they befriend Echo, a cute, tiny alien stranded on earth.

When: August 15, starting at 8:30pm

AquaCurean
