August brings dog days to Savannah it’s true, but we locals don’t let a little heat and humidity get in the way of having summer fun. Besides, as is usual Savannah style, there’s a variety of events to choose from whether you’re leaning toward music, movies, culture, sports or foodie experiences.
AUGUST 2, 9 and 16
Spend a Tuesday night or three on Tybee Island enjoying award-winning ocean films. It’s a fun time that will immerse your entire family in the wonders of the deep and of Gray’s Reef, a National Marine Sanctuary located about 16 miles off the coast of Georgia. Doors open 30 minutes before the show to allow you time to get your favorite movie concessions and settle in.

This two-week musical extravaganza is back to enthrall audiences with the 4th season of unparalleled concerts and special events. You can choose among vocal performances by over 100 artists and music ranging from opera to popular songs. Master classes are yours for the taking. And, you can look forward to favorites like two marathon sessions of arias and songs and a stellar festival finale where the artists come together and leave you awaiting the 2017 event with bated breath.

Don’t miss the third and last movie in the Tybee Island summer outdoor film series. The season winds up with the animated comedy Minions, a spinoff of the Despicable Me franchise. Both kids and grown-ups will get a kick out of the adventure of the little yellow creatures starring in the film. They set out on a quest to find a new evil leader that takes them to New York and Orlando and then to London with a female super-villain who hatches a plot to take over the world.

Stop by Leopold’s Ice Cream for their annual birthday block party and treat yourself to a delicious, cold ice-cream treat on a Southern summer day. Their award-winning ice cream is homemade and single scoops will be 97 cents all day long in celebration of Leopold’s turning 97 years young. The party will have music, games and kids’ activities and there will literally be dancing in the streets.

The National Park Service’s 100th birthday is August 25 and Fort Pulaski has been celebrating all year long by offering monthly fun encounters with nature. The August special event is a guided Wetlands Walk on which visitors will get to explore the expansive salt marsh that surrounds the fort. This intriguing ecosystem is teeming with wildlife of all descriptions and you’ll likely catch a glimpse of sea turtles, otters and more species of birds than you can count.

Join Telfair Museums as they commemorate the 100th anniversary of the purchase of The Unpretentious Garden, painted by celebrated artist Gari Melchers. He was the museum’s fine art advisor for a decade in the early 1900s and is credited with helping to shape Telfair’s permanent collection. The exhibition will feature eight of Melchers’ canvasses including masterful compositions painted in modified Impressionist style. It opens August 26 and continues through December 11.

The third annual AquaCurean will celebrate Savannah’s seafood heritage with a sophisticated flair. The 3-day celebration boasts gourmet seafood and handcrafted spirits served up via varied guest experiences. Like the seated 5-course Chef’s Showcase featuring Mediterranean cuisine paired with cocktails and spirits, the seafood recipe and cocktail competitions where you get to sample and vote on the entries, and the Sunday brunch that offers fresh catch, cocktails and a smorgasbord of brunch selections along with fabulous music by a live jazz band. There are seminars too, plus a wine blending experience and an intimate VIP wine pouring event.

The XC Kickoff Classic marks the start of the 2016 High School Cross Country season. So come out to support the competing teams and to show your running spirit by participating in the open 5000-meter race (starts at 7:00am). Coaches and assistant coaches take note: You can run the 5K for free. And whether you’re a runner or a spectator – mark our word – you couldn’t ask for a lovelier venue. It’s in Daffin Park which is wonderfully shaded and absolutely brimming with natural beauty.
