Aah… April in Savannah… It's one of those months when our city is literally in bloom. Mother Nature is strutting her springtime Southern Charm and Savannah's historic squares, public parks and private gardens are classically awash with a kaleidoscope of floral hues.
Together with delightful temperatures, this scenic display makes April a particularly pleasurable time to explore and enjoy Savannah, including its lineup of outdoor events. What's on tap for the month? Among the happenings are activities like these:
This outdoor artist market starts the month with a fun visual experience. Artists set up along the riverfront in booths topped with crisp white tents. Art selections include paintings, drawings, woodworks, ceramics and such. And there's typically a kids section with face painting, caricatures and the like. The art is for sale, of course. The live music and community performances are free for all to enjoy. If you miss this festival, remember that Savannah's First Friday and Saturday event series continue each month through December.
When: April 3 – April 4
Where: Rousakis Plaza, River Street
Attention Tennis Fans: The Savannah Challenger is back again this year. As is usual, this USTA pro-circuit event is
sure to attract some of the world's top tennis players. Coupled with the competitive matches are special events—Ladies Day and a day for kids to take part in tennis activities. And, as always, Skidaway Island—home to stately oaks, pines and palms and pristine waterways and tidal marshes—makes for a picture-perfect backdrop for the tournament.
When: April 18 – April 26
Where: The Landings Club, Skidaway Island
Cost: From $12 (single weekday tickets) to $80 (weekly tickets)
Wine Aficionados Take Note: Tybee's 7th annual Wine Festival is bringing back some festival goer favorites and adding an Earth Day inspired dinner prepared and presented by four local celebrity chefs. Set in five venues, the festival showcases distinctive slices of Tybee's famously beautiful barrier-island surroundings along with fine international wines, fresh coastal cuisine, and live music at 'Savannah's Beach.' The setting for the Grand Wine Tasting is the historic Tybee Light Station, which stands sentinel to forever horizon views, stunning sunrises and sunsets, and many a mariners' safe entrance to the Savannah River.
When: April 22 – April 26
Where: Tybee Island
Cost: Varies; tickets range from $35 - $85
At this year's SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival, you'll get to experience "living pictures" in addition to the customary spectrum of chalk artwork created on the walkways of historic Forsyth Park. Watch as SCAD staff and students strike and hold a silent, motionless pose as if in a picture. Also watch the sidewalk artists create their masterpieces as you meander through the park enjoying the food and music. Kids will also delight in the chalk-drawing area set up for them.
When: April 25
Where: Forsyth Park
Whether you're a Savannahian or an out-of-towner, it's a treat to get out and about in 'The Hostess City,' especially when she is looking extra pretty. So, go online to the Visit Savannah web site and see what other April events might strike your fancy. Have fun!
